Govt crack down on discrimination in pvt sec

Sumit PandeSumit Pande, CNN-IBN

New Delhi: The government is taking the minority issue a step further and now wants the private sector to stop discrimination on the basis of caste or religion.

One of the recommendations of the Sachar Commission may soon become a reality.

The ombudsman will be empowered to check discrimination of any kind, in recruitments and promotions, in public and private sector alike, against not only Muslims but any social group.

The framework for establishing an Equal Opportunities Commission is ready.

Parliament by its own statutes over the years has crated many commissions like the Minorities Commission and the Commission for the Welfare of the SC-STs

What will be the differentiating factor between the proposed commission and those created in the past is that the Commission, which would be established by an act of Parliament, will have powers of a civil court – to summon people and seek information. However, it will not be given adjudicating powers to impose penalties.

The commission could, however, become party in any court case, where a social group alleges to have been discriminated against. Its most powerful tool will be recommendatory powers seeking policy intervention from the government.

"The commission must have powers to pass orders. Otherwise, it will not have any status. Who will listen to it?" said AIMPLB Spokesperson, S Q R Illyas.

The commission will also be mandated to evolve a series of indicators for the development of a nationwide deprivation index.
