New Delhi: In an exclusive interview to Karan Thapar on CNN-IBN’s Devil’s Advocate, CPM Politburo member Brinda Karat has refused to express embarrassment at the behaviour of the CPM cadre in Nandigram. But she has made it clear that if proven - then those responsible for any rape in Nandigram will be severely punished.

“I respect the works of many of the intellectuals and artists. But I am a little bit puzzled. For 11 months, when 3,500 people were out in the camps Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee said it was a drama. Did they accept that," she said.

Excerpts from the interview:

Brinda Karat: If it is true and it is being verified - it is not a question of CPM cadre - if any woman in Nandigram has been raped in the last five days, let me assure you that this is a government, which will ensure the strictest and most stringent punishment, unlike the BUPC and the leaders of the so called Land Defence Committee did when the women were raped. They did not allow the women's commission to go in.

Karan Thapar: At the moment you are nor acknowledging the rapes either, you are no different, you are not acknowledging the complicity of your cadre.

Brinda Karat: Please let me make it absolutely clear that the rape case has been filed by the police, investigation is on, names have been mentioned by the victim and it is being verified. The strongest action is going to be taken.
