New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party has demanded a probe by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) into the coal scam alleging that the government is influencing the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley has accused the Law Ministry and the Prime Minister's Office of diluting the CBI's status report on the scam.
"The autonomous status that CBI has tried to maintained as been broken. The search for the truth in coal scam has been interfered with. This raises serious questions," Jaitley said. "UPA is a rogue government which will not allow CBI to operate independently," Jaitley added.
Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj also tweeted, ""This is a very serious matter. This is the evidence of government's pressure on CBI to save the Prime Minister."
This came after a report in national daily The Indian Express has said the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) status report in the coal scam was "vetted" by the Law Minister and officials of the Prime Minister's Office. The Congress has distanced itself saying the matter is pending in court. "The matter is pending in the Supreme Court and we do not interfere in court proceedings," Congress leader Rashid Alvi said.
The report says the CBI Director and others involved in preparing the coal scam report had been summoned by the Law Minister Ashwini Kumar and that the report was "toned" down. Questions have been raised about the Prime Minister's own knowledge about the entire coal scam probe report.
The Supreme Court has asked the CBI Director to file an affidavit before the court stating clearly whether the report was shared with government executives as well. The CBI has said that the story is speculative and that it has not filed any affidavit in the SC.
