New Delhi: With the Delhi government bent on implementing the plastic ban in the Capital, not everyone is rejoicing. Traders associations and plastic manufacturers have scheduled a meeting with the with the Delhi Environment department on Thursday to discuss their grievances.
Secretary general, Confederation of All India Traders Praveen Khandelwal said, “The Government is talking about two substitutes – jute and recycled paper. They have drawbacks. Jute is expensive, customer will have to pay for the cost. Notification merely says plastic banned, but where are the other bags available hasn't been told.”
However, the Delhi government says alternatives are already being made available. As a first step, the Environment Department has taken over a stall at Dillihaat to ensure supply of jute bags.
Secretary, Department of Environment also DPCC chairperson said, “NGOs will provide bags to them. Also we expect people to carry their own cloth bags.
But customers say that’s inconvenient.
The associations of traders though point out that providing 3 lakh jute bags at one stall isn’t nearly enough, they are hoping the government will provide them financial assistance and rehabilitate workers who would lose their job if plastic manufacturing units close down. And believes that the government isn't ready to meet those demands.
Meanwhile, the Secretary of Department of Environment says, “We won't give them financial assistance. The workers were in an illegal business which has to shut down. Making Delhi Eco-friendly is more important than worrying about smaller issues.
So, next time when you go shopping and you receive a fancy bag instead of the regular plastic bag, don’t get too excited because you would have paid an additional amount for the same, a small price though to keep our city clean and green.
