Govt's olive branch to suspended MPs

New Delhi: The Government on Friday offered an olive branch to the 11 expelled MPs accused of accepting money for asking question in Parliament.

"We've told them if they withdrew their petition from the Supreme Court, a review committee could do a rethink," says Union Information and Broadcasting Minister, Priya Ranjan Dasmumsi.

These MPs were expelled after a sting operation by a private television channel caught them in the act of taking money.

Pronounced guilty by a Parliamentary committee, these MPs knocked on the doors of the Supreme Court and contended that the Speaker or the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha did not have the powers to expel them.

Through the last one month, these MPs have been meeting all those who could have helped their case, right from the PM to the Sonia Gandhi and LK Advani.

"According to my office and myself, I have not seen any such letter addressed to me", says Lok Sabha Speaker, Somnath Chatterjee.

The first indication of the Government's intent came when in another sting operation, against the Minister of State for Home, Manik Rao Gavit, the entire Lok Sabha unanimously stood in his favour.

Today, the CBI even gave Gavit a clean chit. Now most of our politicians want a ban on these stings.

"There are laws dealing with sting operations. Why can't we, in India also, think of something, says Advani.

There is no time frame yet on when the review commiitee to study the case of the expelled MPs will be set up. But for now they can live in hope that all will be forgiven and everything forgotten.
