Gowda's bahu contests polls from Karnatak

Bangalore: Anitha Kumaraswamy, wife was former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy and daughter-in-law of Deve Gowda is very shy. But she is slowly getting reconciled to the situation and is contesting for the Madhugiri assembly seat. It is one of the eight seats headed for by-polls on December 27.

“Anita's background is not suitable for politics, I also admit. Even when HD Kumaraswamy was CM, she kept a low profile. Though reluctant to enter politics, we workers of party wanted her to enter politics,” says Janata Dal (Secular) spokesperson YSV Dutta.

She may have the right surname, but Anitha's obvious hesitation to be in public life could well be a drawback. She's not comfortable facing the crowds or the countless cameras.

“We are reminded of the incident in Mahabharat where Pandavas had to offer Draupadi in the game of dice,” says BJP spokesperson V Dhananjay Kumar.

These by-elections come at a crucial time because they will be a referendum on what people think of the Yeddyurappa government which has completed six months in power, and will indicate how people will vote in general elections five months from now

By-polls are being held in eight assembly seats whose MLAs quit the JDS and Congress in July to join the BJP. They had then been offered key government posts. Now all of them have to prove themselves in a battle of wits and vote banks in Bangalore.
