Graffiti, posters banned in Chennai

Chennai: The Chennai Corporation has imposed a ban on all posters and graffiti on public walls in an effort to make Chennai look like a world class city.

Commissioner, Chennai Corporation Rajesh Lakhoni said, “The city is a vibrant place with a dense population and we are in competition with international cities now. People don't compare Chennai with a Hyderabad and Bangalore. They say Shangai is like this, Bangkok is like that, Singapore is like this, Thailand is like that. So we had to compete with those cities.”

So colourful wall art is in and graffiti is out. The project has already kicked off in two major corridors and will soon extend to other neighbourhoods. Each wall will be painted according to a theme.

"Basically we have taken up 4 themes. All the sculptures found in various places of TN is one theme, the important structures, historical buildings is another theme and the third theme is some historical depiction of how the society has evolved, like dance forms and cultural forms. The fourth theme is to break the monotony. So some greenery or some other painting will be painted," adds Lakhoni.

However, the biggest challenge to the project comes from political parties who plaster walls with their posters.

The Corporation hopes political parties and the public will cooperate. But those defying the ban will have to cough up substantial fines. So the next time you're in Singara, Chennai, you may be in for a pleasant surprise.
