Grain drain: Rice left to rot in Bihar

Saharsa: With the big grain drain continuing, 32,000 quintals of rice, that was meant to be distributed to below poverty line families, was left to rot in the open in Saharsa in Bihar.

But this time round it was not lack of storage, but it was negligence.

The foodgrain was offloaded at Saharsa station three months ago and was meant to be transferred to the FCI godown at Supaul, 50 kilometers away. What is even worse is that the FCI officers tried to mix the rotten grain with the good grain. The district administration reportedly caught them in the act and registered cases against three officers.

The grain drain continues even as the ministry of food and consumer affairs has constituted a 15 member committee to suggest ways to reduce grain wastage. In a state, where still thousands of people are forced to go hungry, such criminal waste of grain is a grim reminder of how the system is indifferent even to the most basic of needs.
