Chandigarh: For some of the people living in Chandigarh, Tuesday meant a green and 'fruit-full' Independence Day.
Indoor patients at the government medical college and hospital in Sector 32 were distributed fresh fruits by the hospital authorities to mark the day.
The patients, who were given apples and bananas, looked happy and surprised at the doctors' gesture.
At the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), the authorities celebrated Independence Day by planting over 500 saplings all over the sprawling campus.
PGIMER director KK Talwar said, "We planted saplings so that the campus becomes more green."
At the Parade Ground in Sector 17 - the venue for the main event - Governor SF Rodrigues unfurled the national flag and took the salute from marching columns of the Chandigarh police and paramilitary forces.
Schoolchildren staged colourful performances to mark the day.
Independence Day functions were also held in several schools and other institutions in Chandigarh and adjoining Punjab and Haryana.
In Punjab, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh unfurled the national flag in Patiala, his hometown. Deputy Chief Minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal unfurled the flag at Sangrur.
In Haryana, Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda unfurled the national flag at Jhajjar.
