Bundelkhand: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh says farmers in the state have never been happpier. However, a look at the ground reality and the picture that emerges is rather different.

Like many other families in the Bundelkhand region, Amrita's family is struggling to survive. Burdened by debts, her father, the family's sole breadwinner, passed away recently.

And with the drought denying them a good harvest, this family has barely enough to eat. "We cannot farm. There is nothing to eat. We have no support," says Amrita.

Amrita says her father had taken a loan to marry off her eldest sister, but died of a heart attack before paying off the debt.

With his death, the family has fallen on hard times and her mother is worried that she would not be able to marry off her two remaining daughters.

"The daughters have grown up. There is no way we can get them married," says Amrita's distraught mother.

This is the story of many of the farming families in Bundelkhand region. Many have been driven to suicide by the abject poverty that has set in and those who survive are praying for an end to their misery.
