Ahmedabad: With the BJP's crisis coming less than three weeks ahead of the Gujarat polls, it's opposition, the Congress, too has landed itself in a rather embarrassing position. One of its advertisement showcasing malnutrition in the state lifted the picture of a Sri Lankan child.

The picture, showing a severely malnourished child, is featured on the Congress party website - joinhandsforchange.org - under the malnutrition section. It was picked up from the website of a Christian denomination Amyand Park Chapel, which asked for donations for those affected in Sri Lankan floods. The BJP, not surprisingly, has lashed out.

Jagdish Bhavsar, the Gujarat BJP spokesperson, said, "Not just about malnutrition, the Congress is damaging the reputation of Gujarat over other issues as well. People will not forgive the Congress and will teach the party a lesson."

The Congress, however, remains unapologetic. It counters that the BJP is trivialising the issue of malnutrition which is rampant. Ashok Tanwar, a Congress MP, said, "From where the picture has been taken is debatable. The BJP should instead address the root problem which is malnutrition and thousands of children suffer from malnutrition."

The BJP has said that it is contemplating whether or not to approach the Election Commission with a complaint over the issue.
