Surat: Clad in burqa, mother of two, teacher in school – outwardly Yasmin Sajid Shaikh would seem like any other Muslim woman destined for a domesticated life. However, this 29-year-old is soon to be the state's first Muslim woman Deputy Superintendent of Police.
Says Yasmin, who cleared her state public service exams, “I had enough confidence in myself to appear for the exam despite my difficulties. I never gave up my will.”
However, before assuming her new role, Yasmin continues with her daily routine, whether it is teaching at the local school, taking care of her children or offering prayers. Yasmin, who hails from a conservative Muslim family, attributes her success entirely to her family and husband.
“My daughter has been intelligent since childhood. She always wanted to pursue higher studies and be an achiever,” says Yasmin’s father Qayas Mohammed Shaikh.
Her feat is also a matter of pride for Sharda FM School, the school where she has been teaching for the past eight years. Says the principal Sushma Agarwal, “We feel so proud of her achievement. When she gave her exam, she was pregnant and during her oral exam, she took her 21-day baby along.”
Yasmeen is ranked 13th in the merit list of women who have cleared the GPSC exams. And hopefully her wait to wear khakhi instead of the burqa will not be too long.
