The owl is part of a unique effort started by a Surat school. The students of the school are learning to treat birds, injured during the kite flying festival.
As thousands of kites take to the skies, birds like are injured by the manja or the glass coated thread.
"The thread cuts the skin or the bone and often they bleed to death," said Prayas, vice president Darshan Desai.
Organisations working to rescue and treat birds say there are just too few people who think about the birds and their safety. But now, all 5000 odd students of L P Sawani School have pledged not to fly kites. Instead, they will spend the day rescuing the wounded birds.
"We will not only do this now, but continue to do it through the year, so we can save out environment," said student, L P Sawani School, Ankur Thakore.
"Why should we teach only theory about global warming etc, this is a practcial way," said Principal, L P Sawani School, Sanjay Mehta.
The students have circulated pamphlets and their numbers among the community and will remain on call through the festival and after. So, as kite flying enthusiasts sharpen their threads in the hopes of besting rival kites, these students are sharpening their first aid skills, in the hope of saving thousands of lives.
