Ahmedabad: The students in Gujarat do not need to learn their lessons by heart. The Gujarat government has introduced a system where they can refer textbooks while appearing for examinations. This is because the purpose of examination and education is to develop reasoning and application of knowledge, rather than memorizing.
"Questions will be framed in such a way that the application skills and reasoning power of the students will be tested, " says CEO, Gujarat state education board, RK Pathak.
The system is to be introduced in class 8-10 this year, followed by class 11 and 12 next year. Many educationists however are not sure how this will help the students. As for the students they have mixed reactions
"It is not a correct decision. Healthy competition will be killed," says a student, Parth Patel.
"This is a good move. At present, students are encouraged to only memorise and we are under stress before exams," says a student, Stuti Agrawal.
The education board insists that the new system does not mean all students would pass the examinations, but only those who study intelligently could actually use the books while writing the exams.
The new system has the sound backing of Chief minister Narendra Modi
