Sanand: Gujarat's Sanand is all set to become the next major auto hub after Chennai. First, it was Tata Motors and now even Ford and Peugeot auto plants are in the pipeline. A 2200-acre plot of land at Sanand, located about 40 kilometres from Ahmedabad, is quickly evolving into an automobile cluster.
Phillipe Varin, Chairman, Board of Management, Peugeot, said, "An effort made by Gujarat to enlarge and deepen its automotive cluster was very core in our decision. The ecosystem of suppliers is critical to automotive companies and we felt the fast development of Sanand into a world class auto hub would strengthen our arrival."
Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi said, "With Peugeot coming to Gujarat, that position is further strengthened. Gujarat is a global auto hub in the true sense."
In October 2008, Tata Motors signed an agreement to set up the Nano plant at Sanand. In the past three months, Ford and Peugeot have decided to set up their units at Sanand. Talks are on with Suzuki Motors to set up a plant at Sanand.
With big companies setting up units at Sanand, several smaller units like those providing spares and accessories are also coming up in the area. It is boom time for local industrialists at Sanand.
Ravubha Vaghela, President, Sanand Industrial Association, said, "In four or five years from now, Sanand will develop in a big way. It was a small industrial belt till now and it is already on the country's industrial highway."
What is perhaps most crucial in Sanand's development as a major auto hub is the availability of huge land owned by the government.
