Gujjars demand ST status, stage protest in Delhi

New Delhi: The Gujjar commuity is set to stage a massive rally in Delhi on Saturday.

This is part of their bid to put pressure on Rajasthan's Vasundhara Raje government in order that it recommends their inclusion in the Scheduled Tribe list to the Centre.

Over 10,000 people from neighbouring states are expected to participate in the rally, which will be held at the Ramlila ground. The 'Swabhiman Rally' will be led by the All India Gujjar Arakshan Sangharsh Samiti patron, Col Kirori Singh Bainsala. A large number of Gujjar leaders will be participating in the rally, Col Bainsala told reporters on Friday.

He added that the pride of Gujjars was above all considerations and there was no difference in opinion over the 'greater cause' of the community.

The Gujjars had been clashing with the Meena community in Rajasthan in October over their demand for the Scheduled Tribe status. The Meenas are against the inclusion and the amendment of the ST list.
