Gulbarg massacre witness testifies against Modi
Ahmedabad: In Gujarat, a crucial testimony in court may have Chief Minister Narendra Modi in the dock. A witness in the Gulbarg society massacre, where Member of Parliament Ehsan Jaffery was murdered by a mob, says Modi refused to help Jaffery when he called, and even abused the MP on the phone.
The witness who lost seven members of his family including his mother in the massacre at Gulbarg society gave a detailed account of what happened that day. The proceedings are being supervised directly by the Supreme Court.
"Yes, I was scared. But after reaching the court, I decided to tell everything that I had seen," said the Gulbarg Society massacre survivor.
The witness told the court that former MP Ehsan Jaafri had called up Chief Minister Narendra Modi for help, but Modi in turn abused him. Then, he identified close to two dozen accused in the Gulbarg Society case. He also told the court that the dead bodies could be recognised on the evening of February 28, 2002, but they were charred beyond recognition a couple of days later.
Clearly, the witness as shown a lot of grit and courage, not only in identifying about two dozen accused, but also stating in court that Modi turned a deaf ear to Ehsaan Jafri's cries for help.
For NGOs like the Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP), CISF protection for witnesses is good news.
"The fact that witnesses could depose, is a huge and significant message. Within Gujarat, with this dispensation, witnesses can depose. It's a positive sign and other witnesses will get strength that he has got protection and could depose," said secretary, (CJP), Teesta Setalvad.
The riot cases court has also turned down an application by accused, that sought to prevent Teesta Setalvad and R B Sreekumar from attending court proceedings.
