Gurgaon cops get English lessons

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: To cope with the rapid development of Gurgaon and serve the people better. The police are doing their bit to polish their English so they can deal with all sorts of residents who live in the satellite township.

To assure distress to callers when they call the Gurgaon police control room a special 40 hour course has been introduced for policemen to improve their conversation skills and telephone etiquette.

"Good morning madam, I am constable Ganshayam, may I help you," is an example of what one might hear the next time one calls the Gurgaon police control room.

And in just a fortnight cops like Rameshwar Dayal who has never been beyond English alphabets are confidently talking in the language.

"I feel very proud now that I can talk to my superiors in English," says ASI, accounts, Dayal.

Their course director is more than happy with their performance.

"When I started instructing 15 days back I wouldn't have even given them a two on 10, but now I would easily give them a seven on 10," says Kawal Bedi who is with the British School of Languages.

More than making them confident, the Gurgaon police feel this would help them communicate better specially with foreigners.

We get so many calls by foreigners, NRI's and other English speaking people. Before this course we could never address their problems properly," says woman constable Meenakshi.

The man who took the initiative, Gurgaon DCP Headquaters Anil K Dhawan feels this was the need of the hour as this exercise has also brought about a pleasant change in their personality.

"Gurgaon is emerging as a technological hub and we have to cater to a wide variety of people," says Dhawan.

The law and order situation in Gurgaon has definitely deteriorated in the last few months and officials feel that apart from taking a slew of measures to crackdown on crime training programmes like these would help in better policing.

Gurgaon police has set an example that police forces across the country must replicate.
