Gurgaon school sues parents for defamation

New Delhi: A Gurgaon school has sued the parents of its students for allegedly defaming the school on an online forum. A Delhi High Court order had restrained parents from posting their comments on the web group.

The management of the school has sued this group of parents for Rs 20 lakhs.

However, the parents say they are being harassed for questioning the school's fee policies. "In effect our money is being used to file law suits," said a parent Varsha Chandra.

The parents had a long list of allegations against the school, including lack of transparency in fee structure and charging a fee for a certification which the school is still trying to acquire. Parents also say the school management is inaccessible.

"Initially there used to be a breakup of the fee. But in April all the breakups were removed and we had been charged 33 per cent extra," said a parent Rahul Sharma.

"On May 17 we were humiliated and asked to leave the school, one representative was called inside but the meeting was inconclusive," said another parent Vinay Prakash.

When the school management finally broke their silence they insisted they had infact met with the parents many times before going to court.

"We can show you documents and videos of meetings with the parents. We have to invest a lot of resources in the process of getting the PYP certification, that is why we levy the fee," said Scottish High School, Chairman, Kartikeya Saini.

While the parents still have a bone to pick with the school, the law suit has taken the wind off their online protest. They argue that the discussions were never in a public forum and have urged the school to drop the case and resolve the issue out of court.
