What has been making matters worse is that the toll company is yet to give any compensation to the 22-year old victim's family.
Umesh Kant Pandey, a toll collector, was shot dead by two unknown assailants after a midnight brawl over the payment of Rs 27. More than 40 hours later, the police remain clueless with the only lead being that the assailants sped in their white Bolero towards Manesar.
The Police Commissioner of Gurgaon SS Deswal said, "Every vehicle's system should be recorded, but it's not being done. Had it been recorded properly, we could have got the clue about the number of the vehicle."
Friday's shooting has raised important questions about the safety of the toll collectors on the expressway that sees voluminous traffic daily.
Shocked commuters, who frequent the expressway, are worried at the lack of road safety.
The toll expressway management maintained that their repeated requests for enhanced police presence has fallen on deaf ears. However, when questioned on the absence of a private guard at the murder site, the official sounded evasive.
Manoj Agrawal, CEO, Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway, said, "It's a large facility. Guards are deployed at the plaza, but the exact location can be a little here and there when something happens."
This incident shows up various chinks in the security armour of the Gurgaon toll expressway. But for the hapless Pandeys, it will be a while before they can reconcile to the tragic loss of their young son.
