Click to play videoGurgaon: Binola, a small village in Gurgaon is going green. And everyone in the village is doing their bit to make this happen.
“Everybody is aware of the water shortage and therefore each one is trying to save every drop of water,” says a resident of Binola, Vijender Kumar.
The effort to go green starts with water conservation. The drip irrigation system ensures that not a single drop of water is wasted.
At the same time, the villagers gearing up for the monsoons. They are trying to install rainwater-harvesting systems in most of the houses so they can recharge the depleting underground water table.
They are also adopting the green route to deal with erratic power supply in the area. The entire village has now replaced regular bulbs with CFL bulbs. Even the streetlights have been fitted with CFLs. Not only has this initiative reduced power consumption in the village by half, it has also helped them lower their power bills as well.
“We are already working on gobar gas programme for cooking and entire village is using CFL,” says a resident of Binola, Ranbir Singh Nehra.
But that’s not all. Some villagers have installed a biogas plant that uses cattle dung to generate cooking gas. The plant has cost Radha less than Rs 5,000, and she has managed to say no to gas cylinders. What’s interesting is that the left over is used as manure for the fields.
“It’s very useful. We also save gas,” says Radha.
The lesson therefore is simple. To stop wasting energy is to start saving money. So going green may reduce your tab on the environment as well as your bills.
