New Delhi: India's corporate sector has lost nearly Rs 5,250 crore since May 23 due to the ongoing Gurjar stir.

The losses incurred by the railways are estimated to be around Rs 5,000 crore. At least 75 trains were cancelled by the railways as per estimates by official agencies and industry chambers.

The losses are in addition to the physical damage to train tracks because of the stir called by the Gurjars to demand Scheduled Tribe status in Rajasthan with support from people of their community in adjoining states.

"Our estimate of losses does not include the inconvenience caused to passengers who were stranded at stations and disruption to goods transport," President, Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry, V N Dhoot was quoted by news agency IANS as saying.

Northern Railways Spokesperson S Negi told IANS that on May 29 alone — when the agitation was at its peak — the railways suffered a loss of Rs 296 crore because of delays and cancellations.

Officials said refunds were also made to around 37,000 people till May 29.

The prices of wheat and mustard oil have surged by 4 per cent to 5 per cent following a supply crunch after the Gurjars had cut off the state from the rest of the country.

In the last 10 days mustard import to the state has dropped from 1.4 lakh sacks to just 70,000 sacks and on every 100 kgs, the price has risen from Rs 2,930 to Rs 3,025.

The protests also affected bus services to and from Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, the three states that were affected the most.

The Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation (RSRTC) said at least 50 of their busses were damaged.

"Services were also hit in over 60 routes. So far, we have lost around Rs 2,000 crore in revenues and the damage caused to buses is yet to be calculated," the Executive Director of RSRTC, Durga Joshi was quoted by IANS as saying.

In Agra, which houses the famed an important destination for overseas and domestic visitors alike, the tourism sector has been badly hit, as the stir continued for 10 days.

Hoteliers in Agra said there was a significant drop in the occupancy rate and even domestic tourists are not visiting the city.
