The passengers of the Porbander Express faced a harrowing time at the Mathura railway station.
Agitating Gurjars attacked the train and pelted stones at the air-conditioned compartments, injuring 24 people.
The protests by Gurjars in the national capital region had a cascading effect on trains to and from Delhi.
M B Ali for instance had planned his trip to Kolkata from Bikaner to avoid protests in Rajasthan. But the bandh called in Delhi and the rail blockade in Uttar Pradesh spoiled his elaborate plans.
The Indian Air Force employee took a detour via Punjab to reach Delhi in time for his train to Kolkata, only to find his train already delayed by seven hours.
"There is no water in the upper class waiting room. People are sitting on the floor," said M B Ali.
The situation was the same across waiting rooms at the New Delhi Railway Station.
"The Air conditioners are not working, it’s suffocation in here," said one passenger.
According to the Northern Railway office, eight trains were cancelled because of the protests and five others were rescheduled.
Trains delayed include:
- Patna-New Delhi-Patna Special was delayed by 13 hours
- Amprapali Express from Katihar to New Delhi by 13.5 hours
- Maharashtra Sampark Kranti from Mumbai to Nizamuddin was delayed indefinitely
- Mangala Express from Ernakulam to Nizamuddin was also delayed indefinitely
The Gurjar agitation has been called off but it will take s some time for the railway traffic to return to normal.
The railway authorities are requesting passengers to call up railway enquiry numbers 011- 239- 623 89, 011-239-67332 and 011-243-55964 to confirm their train timings before coming to the station.
