Gurjars move SC against cops

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: The Gurjar community has moved Supreme Court alleging harassment by the Rajasthan police, in a petition filed by the Akhil Bhartiya Gurjar Vikas Sansthan.

The petition claims police began harassing Gurjars after the apex court sent suo motu notices to DGPs of four states last week, for failing to control a Gurjar bandh in National Capital Region (NCR).

The Gurjars want the Court to order a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) enquiry into the violence that occurred during their weeklong agitation for Scheduled Tribe status.

The petition also criticises the murder charges registered against their leader Colonel Kirori Singh Bainsla.

They are also angry that no action has been taken against the Meena community which also played a role in the caste conflict.

The SC will hear the petition on June 18.

Meanwhile, the Rajasthan government has taken action against seven RPF and RAF personnels for inaffective handling of Gurjar violence. While has one official has been removed from service, six await postings. Two BJP MLAs from the state have been suspended.

The SC had come down heavily upon the police of four states last week over the June 4 Gurjar sponsored bandh in the NCR, calling it a 'national shame'.

The SC wants to know why the police failed to stop protestors from blocking major roads and burning DTC buses.

Senior police officers have been given ten days time (starting June 5) to reply to the notice. The Rajasthan, UP and Delhi governments also have to submit a report on the incidents in the wake of the Gurjar stir.
