Sawai Madhopur/Jaipur: Fresh violence erupted on Friday, the eighth day of Gurjar protests in Rajasthan, and steps towards a solution to the problem don't appear to be insight.

There are no signs of an end to the face-off between the Gurjar community, demanding a Scheduled Tribes status, and the Rajasthan government. Two people were killed in clashes and police firing in Sawai Madhopur taking the total death toll to over 40.

Neem Ka Thana in Sikar remained tense after a confrontation between the Gurjars and Meenas. The government said the police firing was the last resort.

In Jaipur, Rajasthan Minister for Industries Digamber Singh said, "These kind in incident will only inflame passions. There is no gain in such violent protests."

And as Bharatiya Janata Party leaders were sent from Delhi to counsel Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje flew off to be part of the post-election celebrations in Bangalore, chances of an early rapprochement dimmed.

Even the emergency meeting called by the Gurjar leaders in Jaipur remained inconclusive when differences within stood out.

However, they agreed on one issue.

A Gurjar leader Roop Singh said, "The Gurjar community does not trust the government. We don't want to talk with them. We will only have a dialogue with some one from the Central Government or Chief Minister of some other state."

The road to dialogue between Gurjars and the government is not at all smooth. After over 40 deaths, eight days of protest and much mayhem there has been no breakthrough and peace in Rajasthan remains elusive.
