Click to play videoTrichur: Union minister Vayalar Ravi's son Ravikrishna's prayers have been answered. The doors of Lord Guruvayurappan temple are now open for Ravikrishna, whose entry into the temple had made priests carry out punyaham or purification rituals.
The temple authorities say the decision was wrong as the minister's son was not baptised and all his legal documents showed him to be a Hindu. And there is hope for non-Hindus too.
Says the Chairman of the Guruvayur Devaswom Board, Thottathil Ravindran, "We will hold talks with religious scholars and other organisations. Then we will decide about non-Hindus' entry into the temple."
The debate over allowing non-Hindus entry into the temple has been on for quite some time now. Some priests, especially those at the Sabarimala, where people of all religions are allowed, feel even non-Hindus should be permitted, if they believe in the God.
But a majority are against this.
Says the Guruvayur Thantri (head priest), Satheeshan's son, "These old rituals and customs cannot be broken. They cannot be changed."
Also of interest will be the state government's stand on the issue. The government, though it favours entry of non-Hindus into temples, has till now been careful not to rock the boat.
