HAMPI: Akka Tangi Gundu, a famous rock structure at world heritage site Hampi, broke into pieces in Hampi on Sunday. The rock was situated just beside the road on way to Virupaksha Temple. The incident took place at 1.30 pm on Sunday. However, the broken pieces of the boulders caused no untoward incidents.
The rock is known as ‘Akka Tangi Gundu’ as local fables say that two sisters were transformed into boulders. One of the two boulders supporting the other developed cracks a year ago. The crack in the boulder drew the attention of then-minister for tourism Gali Janardan Reddy.
“It is suspected that the portion which had developed crack collapsed and broke into pieces,” said Deputy SP of Hampi Rashmi. She added that the boulder was on the verge of collapse.
After the boulder broke into two, many locals and tourists too visited the spot to see the broken pieces, said an eye witness.
Assistant Professor of Hampi Kannada University Somashekar said there is no historical information available on ‘Akka Tangi Gundu’.
He added that he had studied in detail about various monuments in Hampi and no inscription was available on these two boulders.
As soon as the incident came to light, Deputy SP Rashmi, Archaeological Survey of India officer Srinivas Murthy and others visited the spot. Officials who conducted spot inspection said that the boulder might have broken into pieces after struck by lightning as heavy rains lashed Hampi on Saturday night.
