Handshake with Dutt proves costly for constables

Mumbai: The Maharashtra Home Minister, R R Patil, has initiated an inquiry against prison staff that were seen greeting actor Sanjay Dutt when he was released from jail.

There was widespread criticism of police personnel and prison staff giving special treatment to Sanjay Dutt. Reacting to this, the Home Ministry has ordered an inquiry.

Former Joint Commissioner of Police, Mumbai, Y C Pawar says, "I thought that drastic and serious action would be taken against this and if I were there, I would have straightaway got the policemen dismissed under Article 311. They were openly and shamelessly shaking hands with Sanjay Dutt despite the fact that he is a convict."

Prison authorities at Pune's Yerwada jail had stated earlier that Sanjay Dutt was being treated only as an ordinary prisoner and no special privileges were being given to him.

However, television visuals showed that prison staff were actually treating Dutt as a celebrity and were in awe of him, when he was brought out for his release on bail.

The public though is not too impressed with the government aiming at only the small fry.

Says a Pune local, Tiwari, "How can they suspend those who were just plain happy that Sanjay Dutt had been released and not do anything about those insiders who supported and helped him in jail."

After the criticism in media about special favours to celebrities, the government does not seem to be taking any chances.

The inquiry against the policemen is probably the first step towards a stricter administration that does not get overawed by the aura of a superstar.
