Handwara (J&K): Handwara is on the boil. Angry locals blocked the Baramulla-Kupwara road and clashed with police after 13-year-old Tabinda Jan was raped and murdered by some unidentified men on Friday.

The 13-year-old student had barely walked two kilometres from school when she was intercepted; she was dragged into this secluded apple orchard and laid here. She was raped and subsequently murdered.

Tabinda's neck was reportedly slashed and there were marks of cigarette butts on her body.

Her shoes, school bag and uniform were found littered around the orchard. Her grieving family is struggling to come to terms with their loss.

“She wanted to be a doctor. She had asked her father to get her a dictionary but look what has happened,” said Tabinda's brother, Nazir Ahmad.

The police say they are doing their best to apprehend Tabinda's killers.

“We have arrested nine people so far. We will get the culprits in couple of days,” said Handwara SP, Dr Haseeb Mughal.

Until the police nab the culprits, residents say they will not be letting their girls walk to school, alone through these deserted orchards.
