Haneef to reach Bangalore today, family rejoices

Bangalore: Indian doctor Mohammad Haneef flew out of Brisbane for India late on Saturday night after the Australian government allowed him to leave the country.

“I have indicated that the Commonwealth has no objection to Dr Haneef leaving Australia,” said Australian Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews.

Haneef's lawyer Peter Russo informed that the doctor also wants to return to Australia in the future.

“I think he'd like to come back to be able to continue his studies and to work at the Gold Coast Hospital,” said Russo.

But the Australian government is in no mood to oblige him as his visa has been revoked. The Immigration Minister indicated he would not change his decision and that the government would resist Haneef's court appeal against the visa cancellation.

Russo, who is coming to India with Haneef, says he will keep fighting till the doctor is granted a visa.

The Indian government is also pitching in for Haneef with External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee asking Canberra to do the needful.

Haneef, who arrived at Bangkok International Airport on his way home early on Sunday morning, remained within the airport's inner terminal.

In Haneef’s home in Bangalore, meanwhile, celebrations have already begun, and Haneef's wife, Firdaus is excitedly waiting for the re-union.
