Darjeeling: Now some of the children of tea garden workers can look forward to realising their dreams.
They study for free in this English medium school, built in memory of 17-year-old Hannah Foster, who was raped and murdered in Britain in March 2003.
These kids have the same aspirations as the late Hannah. "When I grow up, I will be a doctor,” says Sagar Rai, a student of Hannah Memorial Academy.
All this has been made possible by the self-less act of a 33-year-old civil contractor, Jayson Lepcha.
Lepcha built the school last year with the Rs 3.5-lakh reward he received for tipping off the police about Maninder Pal Singh Kohli's whereabouts.
Kohli, the prime suspect in the Hannah Foster rape and murder case, had fled Britain and had been hiding in Darjeeling.
"What I thought was that if an Indian can do something really bad, why can't an Indian do something good? That's why I built this school,” said Lepcha.
What started as a humble effort with 22 students is now a school of 67 kids with six teachers and non-teaching staff.
Lepcha now plans to start a library and introduce computer education. A little tight on finances he may be, but the Samaritan looks undaunted.
These underprivileged children are living a dream: a dream to become honest, capable and successful human beings. A dream that British teenager Hannah Foster had dreamt for herself.
