Bhopal: Chirula village in the Datia district of Madhya Pradesh wears a deserted look as half of the 500 families that lived there till about one year ago have all moved out.
The place does not have sufficient water for the past four years and no electricity for the past nine months. Those who have stayed behind have no other option.
"My family has gone. I want to go as well but cannot because I'm physically challenged. I'll be a burden for them," a Chirula villager, Ram Naresh Tripathi, says.
Previously this village had electricity. But when the drought-stricken village ran into bad times, the power distribution company was forced to remove the transformers.
"They did not pay the electricity bills so we had to cut the connection in about 35 villages,” district engineer B L Singh Umrao says.
Chirula is not the only village reeling under the crisis. Other villages like Hamirpur, which is five km away, suffer a similar fate.
The opposition Congress party says they have been trying to convince the people not to leave their villages.
"We are trying to convince them and we will ensure that they get some work," president, state Congress, Suresh Pachauri assures.
