New Delhi: The knives are out between two chief ministers – Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Punjab Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal over Chandigarh.
Haryana wants a separate High Court for itself in the city and also demands that Haryana governor also get a chance to be Chandigarh administrator and not just Punjab governor.
Bhupimder Singh Hooda said, “I have told them before that the charge for Chandigarh should rest with Punjab governor for a year and Haryana governor for another.”
However, this is something the Punjab CM has taken an offence to.
In a strong letter written to Union Law Minister Veerappa Moily, Parkash Singh Badal has written:
"The proposal of setting up a separate HC for Haryana at Chandigarh is a move to turn Chandigarh into a perpetual Union Territory. It's not acceptable... But if Haryana wants a separate HC, Punjab cannot accept the proposal of it being set up at Chandigarh. Haryana government should be asked to start moving their officers out of Chandigarh so that the UT can be transferred to Punjab."
Meanwhile, the Centre is looking to postpone a decision as much as possible, especially since it could be seen as a battle between a Congress ruled and an Opposition ruled state.
“These decisions are taken not by Government alone. We need to talk to the Supreme Court and we need to consult the High Court chief justices of Haryana and Punjab,” said Veerappa Moily.
