Haryana: Court stays hanging of rape-murder convict Dharampal Singh

Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Saturday temporarily stayed the hanging of a rape-murder convict, Dharampal Singh, in Haryana. A division bench of Justices AK Mittal and Gurmeet Singh Sandhawalia stayed the hanging of the convict following a petition filed by NGO, Lawyers for Human Rights International. The petition was filed by lawyer Navkiran Singh.

Dharampal Singh, 45, a resident of Haryana's Sonipat district was first convicted for a rape case in 1991 and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment. Later, along with his brother, he murdered five members of the rape victim's family when he was released on parole in June 1993. He was convicted and sentenced to death by the Sonipat district and sessions court in May 1997.

Lodged in the Central Jail in Ambala for his execution, Dharampal's mercy petition was rejected by President Pranab Mukherjee March 28, 2013.
