New Delhi: A double tragedy for a Dalit family in Hisar, Haryana after a man was finally cremated four days after he committed suicide because his daughter was allegedly gangraped by eight upper caste men in Dabra village.
The family says the father killed himself because he knew he wouldn't be able to take on the accused - who remain at large even three weeks after the crime.
The men gangraped her, filmed the crime and threatened to kill her if she exposed them. They are all wanted for murder. The girl's father was forced take this desperate step.
Reports indicate the accused circulated the video of the rape, but no action has been taken yet despite the girl's ability to identify the accused.
Thus far, the police has been able to arrest only one of the eight accused, and that too only after the father's death and mass protests by Dalits.
The NCPCR has promised an investigation into the case.
The girl's father's suicide may have got New Delhi's attention, but it's a long road still, to justice for her family and the community.
