Haryana town switches on energy saving lamp

Kalanvali (Haryana): Haryana's Binola village was the first to go 100 per cent CFL in the country. Now a whole town has switched to this energy saving lamp.

Kalanwali - a town with a population of 28,000 is the first town in the Country to do so.

Surjeet Kumar is working late in a town that sleeps usually by 8 hrs, IST. One extra job done means some extra money earned. And to make some savings he has replaced his bulb with a CFL.

"It has brought down my electricity bill, " says Surjeet.

Across the street, Satish Kumar's tobacco stall also sports a CFL.

"It started happening in the last one month, " says Satish.

Though not everyone's excited about the low-energy tube.

"It is expensive and they should bring down the costs," says a resident of Kalanwali.

But for Amarjeet Jindal a cost difference of almost Rs 100 between bulbs and CFLs is hardly a deterrent.

‘Home Sweet Home’ is now a complete CFL home for the Garg family who say the switchover in their small town is almost one bulb to 200 CFLs.

So how is the CFL campaign's success in Kalanwali gauged by the Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam?

Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam General Manger Vijeyndra Kumar says, "The load requirement has gone down by 22 per cent despite many new connections, and so have the power cuts.”

The economics is simple and that is why the Electricity board also targets those from the lower economic segment like Kalaram.

Every new connection in the town requires a CFL purchase receipt and a warranty card.

Even then it may not be a complete 100 per cent switch but the Bijli Nigam's men in blue continue to knock on the doors of change.
