Payannur (Kerala): They may not speak the same language or share cultural similarities, but that isn’t stopping men from Haryana from tying the knot with women from Kerala.
Payyanur village of Cunnoor district in Kerala has become a unique symbol of national integration with Jat men from Haryana’s Hissar travelling more than 2,000 km to the quaint township in search of a bride.
“In Kerala you will not find a single woman who has not passed high school. Now more and more Jats are scouting for a partner here because they feel Kerala women can make the future of their kids safe,” says Naresh Elawadi, who is looking for a wife for his friend.
Over the last two years, Payyanur has seen at least 25 Jat-Malayali weddings.
Sharada has been living in Hissar after she married Naresh's brother, and has no regrets.
“Perhaps I was the first one to go from my village to Haryana. I have never faced any problems. Seeing my experience, many women have now come forward,” she says.
Academicians studying demography say the trend, if it continues, could even check the dowry menace in Kerala, besides making a positive change in the patriarchal family setups of Haryana.
“Kerala women will produce only two children today, they will also carry the small family norm to Haryana,” says Chair Professor, Research Unit on Migration, CDS, S Irudaya Rajan.
