New Delhi: India's fashion extravaganza Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW) kick-started on Wednesday with 82 designers lining up to showcase their collections to buyers from London, Paris, Tokyo and Europe.
"There will be about 150 domestic and foreign buyers, including organised retailers like Reliance Retail and Pantaloon. Of this, 50 buyers are from European and other countries," Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) Director General Rathi Vinay Jha told PTI.
The fashion industry currently estimated at Rs 600-700 crore and events like this provide a platform for designers and buyers to build long-term relationships, Jha said.
The fashion community would be watching out for trend setting designs at designers showcase their collections in 40 shows spread over five days.
At the 11th edition of the fashion week 61 designers would showcase their collections on the ramp and rest in their stalls set up at the venue. The Autumn-Winter edition of the fashion week would see 40 ramp shows as compared to 29 in last year's event.
Day one of the Fashion Week would see designers like Vikram Phadnis presenting his collection.
The event would also provide an opportunity to 15 designers, including Charu Parashar, Rahul Reddy and Nitin Bal Chauhan who would make their debut at the Fashion Week runway.
"We have the highest number of designers showcasing their collection for the first time this year. It is a clear indication that the Fashion Week is the only platform that drives the Business of Fashion agenda. A large number of new and established designers are associating themselves with WIFW every season," FDCI Executive Director Sumeet Nair said.
