Chennai: Fifty-eight-year-old Ramji is on a campaign trail. What's interesting is that neither is he a contestatant, nor is he campaigning for a political party.
Through his campaign, O Podu - named after a recent tamil hit song - Ramji and 20 other volunteers are promoting Section 49(0) of the Representation of People's Act.
It is a section that allows the voter to register at the polling booth, get their index finger inked, but refrain from casting the vote, expressing that he are not happy with any of the contesting politicians.
"We want to tell the voter that if you don't want to vote, there's a provisison under 49(0) of the Representation of People's Act, where you can record that you don't want to vote for any of the candidates," says a negative vote campaigner Ramji.
The electronic voting machines do not accommodate such votes. However, under Section 49 (0) of the Representation of People's Act, the vote can be registered by telling the electoral officer to register it separately.
"The moment more and more voters express their disgust with politicians, the political parties will be forced to think twice before fielding a candidate," says another negative vote campaigner, N Gnyani.
So, are you ready to go out and vote and tell the politician just how much you hate the political class?
