Rajasthan: The Gurjar community says it plans to go the Gandhian route. There will be no agitations for the next three months.
But of course their demand for Scheduled Tribe status is still very much on the agenda. And they have also called for Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje's resignation.
Just 20 days after a peace deal was brokered between the Vasundhara Raje government and Gurjar leader Col Bainsla, the community once again gathered at Pushkar in a show of strength.
While the rally was huge, with a one lakh strong crowd Col Bainsla surprised everyone with an unexpected announcement.
No more violent agitations, dharnas or even Mahapanchayats for the next three months.
This time would be used to garner support for their cause Scheduled Tribe status.
Bainsla said, “We want to give them ST reservations, education and to change their way of life.”
The Gurjars also passed a resolution demanding Raje's resignation holding her entirely responsible for the loss of 25 lives.
But even as the colonel announced the decisions, voices of dissent could be heard. Clearly rifts within the community are surfacing.
Sachin Pilot’s mother, Rama Pilot said, “If any member of our community says something because of their mentality or due to a slip of tongue, we must sit and discuss it.”
While the Pushkar mahapanchayat worked as a show of strength by the Gurjar community and its bound to cause concern within the Raje government, with rifts surfacing within the community already, it will be a huge challenge before the Gurjars to carry forward this momentum.
