New Delhi: A goof-up by immigration authorities at Delhi's IGI airport helped US National Kenneth Haywood slip out of the country. Reports have suggested that an immigration officer posted at Delhi's international airport has been taken off the desk for further questioning.
Haywood's IP address was hacked by terrorists to send a threatening email, minutes before the serial blasts in Ahmedabad, which killed almost 60 people.
There was a lookout notice against Haywood at international airports across the country and he had been advised by Maharashtra's Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) not to leave the country without permission.
The Home Ministry has ordered a larger probe into the matter and has asked the Bureau of Immigration to submit a report on the matter.
ATS officers had summoned Haywood several times in the past week, but he had failed to appear before them.
Haywood was also scheduled to undergo a narco-analysis test. The ATS however is now saying Haywood - who worked for an MNC, Campwell White - was not facing any investigation.
Sources have indicated that there was pressure from the US government to let Haywood go home after investigations showed that he was innocent. However, the American Embassy has hastened to clarify that it had no role in helping Kenneth Haywood leave India.
Haywood's smooth passage out of India raises the worrying question: How could a person named in such a sensitive, high-importance investigation be allowed to leave the country?
