Kochi (Kerala): With no place to dump garbage, Kochi is now at its stinking worst. Every nook and corner of the city is stuffed with garbage to the brim.
Says a citizen, Joe Santo, “This city has become a menace. It's become a city of garbage. This is horrible. Life has become miserable.”
The city is grasping for breath, while the authorities are still groping for answers.
The city Corporation had to backtrack on plans to convert Brahmapuram, a village in the outskirts of Kochi, as a dumping yard after locals objected.
Now the High Court has asked the district collector to make Kochi free of garbage in the next five days.
“The entire garbage of the city could be lifted in next three days on a war footing, employing thousand of employees and thousand of vehicles,” says District Collector, Ernakulam, Mohammed Haneesh.
Meanwhile health activists are up in arms. They say the city is very close to an epidemic outbreak if the garbage is not removed on a war footing.
“Each one has his own responsibility in this eradication of waste. Individual organisations and NGO's should join hand in hand with the government,” says activist, Dr.Roby Kananchira.
The collector has also decided to use his judicial powers and claim land belonging to the state-run fact for the purpose.
But uncertainty continues, as a long-term solution looks nowhere near.
