HC directs Theni cops to file ATR

newindianexpressExpress News Service

MADURAI: The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has directed the police to file an action taken report (ATR) in the case of death of a 10-month-old infant due to alleged medical negligence of the staff at a primary health centre at M Suppulapuram, near Andipatti.

A Suresh, father of the infant, had moved the Bench seeking a compensation of Rs 50 lakh for the death of his child. He also pleaded to transfer the case to the CB-CID wing.

According to him, Uma Balasankar, the doctor, and Mariyammal, a staff nurse, who attended his son, Mathubalan, and two other children, Alaguraja (11) and Karthiga (9), on January 21 administered an injection. In five minutes, all the three children reportedly fainted and Mathubalan died en route to the Government Medical College Hospital.

In his affidavit, Suresh suspected the involvement of several powerful authorities as the medicine must have travelled through a lot of places before reaching the PHC. Alleging that the Kandamanoor police did not conduct a proper probe, he requested that the case be transferred to CB-CID.  Justice K K Sasidharan, before whom the case came up for hearing on Friday, issued directions to the Theni police to file an ATR in the case.
