Ajmer: The Rajasthan High Court on Tuesday dismissed 80-year-old Pakistani virologist Dr Khalil Chishti's plea challenging the life imprisonment awarded to him in a murder case.
That sentence had come after a 19 year long trial during which he was virtually under house arrest.
The mercy plea of Chisti, who is now lodged in Ajmer jail, is pending with Rajasthan Governor Shivraj Patil.
His family had met the Governor of Rajasthan earlier this month and pleaded for his release.
Human rights activists have also been rallying for him, saying the 80-year-old doctor should be allowed to go home, just as Pakistan freed Gopaldas who was an Indian prisoner in Pakistan.
