Kolkata: The ripples of the Rouvanjit Rawla suicide case has finally reached the Calcutta High Court, which has ordered the West Bengal government to carry out wide publicity against corporal punishment in schools.

The court has asked the state government to step up its publicity in both print and visual media. It has also asked the government to specify its guidelines and to strict penal actions against erring teachers and schools for violations of school guidelines.

Last week, the court had rebuked the state for failing to implement orders it had earlier passed to prevent the practice of corporal punishment in schools. It has also asked for an affidavit on action taken in the issue.

Thirteen-year-old student Rouvanjit Rawla, a student of La Martiniere school, allegedly committed suicide in February earlier this year, after being allegedly caned by his principal Sunirmal Chakraborty.
