HC pulls up cops over Pereira case

Mumbai: The Bombay High Court has come down heavily on the prosecution and the Mumbai police calling their investigation insensitive.

The High Court has severely criticised the prosecution and the police in a damning indictment of shoddy investigations in the Alistair Pereira hit and run case.

A Mumbai sessions court had previously virtually let off Pereira with a mere six month sentence despite finding him guilty of running over and killing seven pavement dwellers in Bandra last year.

The high court asked why were Pereira's co-passengers not examined as witnesses during the trial in the lower court.

How was Pereira able to arrange for the entire bail amount of Rs 5 lakh within 30 minutes of the judgement being pronounced.

The high court also commented on the police investigations calling them insensitive.

"As professionals, if we found something wrong with our work at any stage, definitely we would like to set it right and benefit by that. It's nothing like trying to hush up anything or trying to save anybody – no question," said Mumbai Police Commissioner D N Jadhav.

The courts have also made the prosecution responsible for filing an affidavit stating the amount of compensation paid to the victim and whether they have actually received it.

The case has been adjourned till June 6.
