HC raps Ganguly Committee, says only 1 yr pre-school needed

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has accepted the Delhi government's affidavit and has ruled that from the 2008-09 academic session, there will be only one year of pre-primary education.

The HC has also said that students will be admitted at the age of four to nursery and will reach Class I at the age of five, taking up the minimum age of admission.

However, schools are not too impressed with this for they feel that two years of pre-schooling is required before a child gets his first taste of school.

On the interview issue for nursery admission, the Delhi government has rejected the recommendations of the Ganguly Committee calling it a interference with the schools autonomy as given under law.

The biggest cause for grief was the 100-point system recommended by the Ashok Ganguly Committee which would seal the fate of thousands of young children.

There will be 10 points for parents coming from the same school; 20 points if a sibling was in the school;10 points if the child is a girl; 20 points based on parents qualifications; and 20 points depending on how far from the school parents stay.

The court has given the Delhi government six weeks to come up with mandatory guidelines for schools to follow during the admission process.

The next date of hearing for the case has been set at November 7.
