New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Friday stayed the recommendation of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences’ (AIIMS) apex body to terminate the services of Director P Venugopal.
The matter will be heard next on August 17. Justice Anil Kumar issued notices to the Centre, AIIMS, Minister of Health and Family Welfare A Ramadoss and the Election Commission asking them to file their replies within two weeks on the petition filed by Venugopal.
Ramadoss has said that all the possible legal recourse in the Venugopal case will be taken. He also said that salaries of doctors will be withheld during their striking period and a final action will be taken against the doctors on Saturday.
Venugopal has sought Ramadoss's disqualification on the ground that he was holding an office of profit as president of AIIMS.
Justice Kumar granted the interim stay after a marathan three-hour argument by Additional Solicitor General Gopal Subramanian for the Centre and senior lawyer Arun Jaitley on behalf of Venugopal.
Venugopal will fight on
Minutes after the court order, Venugopal said he would not compromise on AIIMS’ dignity and continue fighting for its autonomy.
"I am looking forward to maintaining the autonomy and dignity of the institute for which I have always fought," said Venugopal adding he could ignore the "personal humiliation" meted out to him.
Asked about Ramdoss's allegation that he went public with his grievances, Venugopal said, "Ask him who went public? He has himself gone public before me.
"I have never gone public on what happened before my faculty and students," he said.
Venugopal on Thursday filed a petition in the Delhi High Court, challenging the recommendation to sack him. The institute's 17-member apex body, which is headed by Ramadoss, on Wednesday recommended his removal on the charge that he had violating the hospital's code of conduct.
