Srinagar: He is popularly known as the flag man, someone who attracts attention as he walks down the road. But that doesn't seem to bother 54-year old Dr Karan.

The National Flag is his constant companion right from his early morning walk, to going to work and even during his evening shopping.

“I like the colours of the flag and whenever I hold the flag I feel that power of the one billion people is with me. The National Flag belongs to the voters and not the politicians,” says Dr Karan.

However, that's not all, the Ayurvedic doctor is a regular at schools, and teaches the students the significance of the National Flag. He also talks to them about the Indian Constitution.

But when asked what his purpose is, Dr Karan says, “How to differentiate a National Flag and a political flag. I say there are four colours in a national flag to differentiate it from political flags. There are four colours and every colour has a message.”

Even his house is filled with Tricolours in every form such as polythene bags, invitation cards and on just about anything, the Indian flag is printed.

So what do people around him have to say?

“The Tricolor has become his identity. He cannot leave it now even if it means irking his wife,” says Dr Karan’s neighbour, Janak Raj Mani.

It’s been 37 years since the 54-year old man and his flag have been inseparable. He says the flag gives him the power and the strength to carry on, a strength which ever Indian needs to recognise.
