Bhubaneshwar: About 22 people have died due to heat wave in Orissa.

The elephants at Bhubaneshwar’s Nandankaran Zoo just can’t have enough of their daily bath.

A breathless summer is already giving hell to both man and animal in the state.

Summer holidays have been declared in educational institutions and field labour is being allowed only in the morning hours.

The mercury that has gone above the 45 degrees Celsius mark in many places is not expected to climb down soon.

"The north westerly wind pattern is causing these conditions. The huge humidity at the coastal Orissa and dry air in western Orissa is making the situation worse,” says director, metrological department, Bhubaneswar, S C Sahu.

But officials admit that mindless mining and large-scale deforestation could also be adding to the rise in temperatures.

"There is no doubt that the mining activities and deforestation are leading to such conditions. I hope the industrial houses will soon abide to the instructions the government of Orissa have been consistently telling them to follow,” says Special Relief Commissioner, Orissa, N K Sunderray.

Exactly a decade back in a similar heat wave condition more than 2,000 people had died.

But due to the initiative taken by the awareness campaign the number of casualties have come down drastically over the years.

However, what has not really changed is the prevailing heat wave conditions and the factors which are responsible for such conditions.
